Narla was feeling cocky. It was important to remember that as an Australian Dingo she was almost always cocky, but today she was feeling especially cocky. The short dingo - short by wolf standards but perfectly average by her own - swaggered her way through the clearing enjoying the heat of the sun in the spring. Where it broke through the canopy and landed upon her shoulders her skin would tingle in delight. This was comfortable for her, she was far better suited to the warm climate of home. It was still early Spring so the chill in the air encouraged her to move and keep her muscles warm without making her uncomfortably cold.

The dusty warrior could smell the scent of the wolf she was after. Breeze was nearby. Narla had heard of challenges before and how they could result in the gaining of rank. She didn't mind if she advanced or not - well she did a little, let's not lie. She kind of wanted something with responsibility. She was a hard worker and wanted to show herself she was actually worth something. If after all of Fel's harsh training she couldn't get somewhere then this experiment of hers wasn't worth it. Wolves would never accept her as a friend or ally, only an oddity to be exploited. She might seriously consider making the journey back home if she couldn't pull this off. She would be hurt leaving Fel - her only real friend so far - and she would probably die before she made it back but it was better than the alternative of living out her life as a regular warrior, no real responsibility or meaning.

In the centre of the clearing she stopped and let loose her high-pitched howl - better practised and less strangled now. It was not particularly loud, it didn't need to be. She called out to the Delta female. "Oi! Delta Breeze, I challenge you. It's time to duel." She grinned, playful as ever, preparing herself. Her muscles tensed ever so slightly in preparation for movement, tail wagging in enjoyment at the prospect of a real fight.

Breeze was quite happy that spring had arrived, since it had brought warmer weather to the lands once again. Not that it was truly warm, but it was better than the icy winter temperatures. It was nice to see the small shoots of greenery poking up from the slowly thawing soil while on her early morning patrols. Many animals would be reappearing from their dens and new life would grow. The thought always gave the muscular female great satisfaction. After patrols, she had actually gotten a chance to hunt a bit, then go back to her den. The opportunity to rest and relax was sometimes hard to come by, and the grey she-wolf had been happy to enjoy some quiet relaxation time. A little while later, after she had rearranged some of the pelts in her den, the Delta was surprised to hear a high pitched call. It was obvious the sound was not quite the noise a wolf would make, so it had to have come from only one packmate. Rising to her paws, Breeze walked just outside the entrance of her den, peering out to see Narla standing in the center of the clearing. The Dingo was quick to call her out with a challenge. The Warrior's playful grin was met with a smile from the larger female. Oh good, this shall be interesting! Let’s see how she does. The fae thought as she nodded to the golden pelted canid. Excitement shimmered within her orbs as she moved closer, planting her sturdy grey paws firmly on the earth once she stood facing the challenger. “Aha, come to spice up my daily routine? Let’s get to it then! I won’t go easy on you, although I’m sure Fel made sure you can handle that.” She replied, her gaze assessing her opponent while she tensed her muscles for a moment and relaxed them again. The grey wolf had pinned her ears the moment she stopped waking, while her tail moving from it’s typical position for her rank to being tucked safely beneath her. Breeze nodded briskly, her senses on high alert already, in case she tried a surprise attack. “Show me whatcha got!”

Ooc - I'll keep this short so we can smash this out real quick

The Delta emerged soon enough, a smile upon her lips. Good. This was all in good fun with no hidden emotion. The warrior only wanted the chance to prove herself a good student and worthy to stand in the presence of these mighty wolves. They were larger than her, stronger and meaner, but she was faster and quick thinking. And her height wasn't a complete disadvantage either. The larger creatures had to come down to her level to fight her. She was glad to hear the Delta accept her challenge with such enthusiasm, after this she might like to get to know the Delta on a friendlier level. For now she lowered her stance, along with her tail, keeping her form slim and narrow in preparation for the first pounce. Her superior made it clear she wasn't going to make the first move. Fine, I cane get this thing going. She made her first lunge, charging head on for the female. After Fel's brutal training her legs were stronger than ever before, carrying her to within the she-wolfs reach in less than no time. In the final moment before striking the larger fae she slid to the right - ah if only they'd been back on the ice, she would have been so very graceful. In preference of attacking the neck first, as was the obvious choice, Narla snapped her jaws for the dark faes ankle. Snap a tendon and she won't walk, the fight would be over in seconds. It was clear Fel was rubbing off on her. Narla didn't want to do enough damage to be permanent, this wasn't the place for that, but Fel had taught her to treat every fight like it was for her life. Breeze is the puma and I will not lose this time. I am stronger and smarter than I was before.

The larger female had known the Dingo would use her speed and size. What else was such a small creature supposed to do against a more heavily built opponent? She could not win a battle of strength. The Warrior would undoubtedly use her speed and wit to try and undermine the Delta. Breeze watched carefully, not at all alarmed by how quickly the other approached. The fae forced herself to remain relaxed for a bit as the other charged. Jaws snapped open at the ready to grasp onto her opponent. It was well known for first attacks to be more sneaky, however, so her gaping jaws were the only sign of her preparation. Still, the she-wolf could only be so quick in mind. The fae was soon darting in from the side. A good tactic since her tiny size would make it difficult for the larger canid. It was a good move indeed, but that didn’t mean the wolf would just let this Warrior land her move without doing anything. Just as Narla began to dart in, the fae stepped back and let her body drop with the side facing the dingo just barely falling first. She aimed to immobilize the smaller female with as much of her body weighing the other down as possible. Hopefully, she could keep her legs relatively out of reach, although if she got the chance, she would also pummel the dingo with her front paws. The impact would make her sore, no matter what she did, but the dark pelted wolf knew it was far from the worst she would experience in this duel.

Attack: Stepping back and falling so that her side takes an impact, aiming to sorta crush, immobilize Narla, then pummel her with front paws (she is hoping that her blows would land on the head and neck)
Defense: Tail tucked, ears against her head, sturdy stance, and trying to keep her back legs away from Narla’s jaws
Injuries: Bruising from the fall impact. Narla’s teeth might scrape her somewhere in the fall?

NOTE - Let me know if this is ok! Twas complicated for me to envision this in my head so I dunno how well I explained it.

the rogue king

I never expected to find myself here, but now that I am... I can't see myself being anywhere else.

Desmond had heard the challenge happening right outside his den, in the pack clearing. He woke himself up, knowing full well he needed to go out there and see what all was happening. The Alpha stood up and walked out. He stood not too close to the brawl itself, but a safe distance. It was nice to see so many wolves challenging one another for rank. It showed a thirst, a drive to be better than they were. Desmond sat on his hind legs, watching before him. He would make no judgements now, it was far too early in the fight. But he would wait, hoping neither fae would get too hurt in the challenge. He sat relaxed, watching as if these two were performing just for him. Perhaps it was that way, technically. But it was not for his satisfaction. It was for progress. The best wolf wins.

with great responsibility comes a lot of bullshit...

The dingo wanted to believe this fight would be an easy one, cocky and headstrong as she was. When she dreamed of this moment she envisioned moving swiftly, taking down the much larger Delta with ease, making use of her smaller size and swift action. The image of easily spotting every minor flaw in the Delta's technique and using them against her was in her brain, however the world does not play out as we desire. Instead of a swift bite to the ankles, incapacitating her opponent, the Delta stepped aside, avoiding the intended blow win favour of one far less damaging. The large fae allowed her body to collapse, providing an awkward target for Narla. Her extended canines instead scraped along the wolfs exposed side. How deep they went she could not say for sure, she was too focused on minding her landing.

Quickly, she realised she was going to become trapped beneath the wolfs heavier body. It was not a place she wanted to be. With speed she could win, but not strength. Tipping her body with the movement of their fall she would grapple with the fae. Her dead shot forth, snapping for the side of Breeze's neck attempting only to grab a hold of the fae and use the momentum of their fall to roll herself - and her opponent - backwards, landing with herself on top. As she would roll, her hind legs would kick with the force of their momentum to push the fae over her head and keep the movement going. She needed to be on top for this to work.

The dingo was quicker both in thought and action than Breeze had first assumed. The pain in her side blossomed as fangs slashed through her pelt and into the muscle underneath. The cuts weren't major, but they were still a respectable size. Much to her dismay, the little sand colored fae tried to bite at her neck. A growl escaped her maw as she moved her head away so that the fae didn't bite too deep. It was more of her pelt than her flesh, but Narla also pulled on what she had caught within her jaws, prompting the larger she-wolf to rolls sideways. The dingo was trying to get on top! It didn't help that she ended up falling on that side. Crimson stained the earth where Breeze's body landed, and her side throbbed. A soft grunt could be heard as she took the impact. Breeze knew she would have to roll with it, quite literally. In fact, she helped the roll along, tucking her paws and tail against her body as best as she could with ears flat. The pain of the fall was lessened by the roll as well. Even when she could have stopped, the grey pelted female attempted to continue rolling sideways. She tried to roll with the Narla  over and over in order to flatten the dingo between the Delta's body and the ground. You want to roll? Let's roll! She would roll until the other stopped her or was no longer near her.

Attack: continuing with the roll in hopes of crushing Narla beneath her weight multiple times
Defense: Moved her head away to minimize the bite to the neck. Tail tucked, ears against her head, limbs kept against her body, and rolling to make the impact of the fall less painful.
Injuries: Bruising from the fall. Minor cuts along her side (right side I believe?), wounds/cuts on her neck.

By some twist of fate, her plan seemed to actually be working. The dingo's jaws latched onto the scruff of Breeze's neck and as she fell the dingo was able to position her hind legs so they slid beneath Breeze's belly. This trick of acting the heavy deadweight was one Fel has used before, ending in the much smaller creature being crushed by the weight of the large wolf. But back then Narla had been unprepared and a little less cunning with her tricks. Now, however, she was a little more experienced and definitely more creative in her attacks. Properly positioned now, the warrior used the momentum of Breeze's fall to roll herself - and Breeze - until the dingo was on top. Unfortunately, what she didn't account for was the Delta seeing into her plan and rolling with her. Instead of Narla making a backwards roll and ending up on top of the fae, she was rolled uncontrollably off Breeze, losing her balance in the landing. She tasted fur and a hint of blood in her mouth as her jaw released the scruff of the others neck. The dingo tried to recover quickly, bounding over to the larger fae, hoping to catch her off guard and pin her down. If she was successful, Narla intended to make a bite for the neck - not one that would kill, but one that would show she'd exploited an opening and in doing so would have killed her opponent had this been a fight to the death.

Her plan didn't quite work out as planned, although thankfully the dingo wasn't on top of her as she had planned. Instead, the grey she-wolf almost immediately noticed the lack of extra weight against her. Narla had rolled away, and the moment this happened, the Delta's instincts screamed at her to get to her paws. A slow recovery in a fight could mean death. Breeze rolled to her paws, and remained crouched in an effort to pretend to be stunned with herears back and eyes narrowed. Yet, out of the corner of her eye she could see the Warrior charge at her. The larger canid would wait, letting Narla get closer, then she would lunge, up and forward with jaws gaping wide, to try and latch onto the fae's neck as well. Hopefully the dingo's speed would give her little time to avoid the attack. Her own shoulders would hunch in order to protect her own. It was a simple tactic to pin the other down, and it was something her own mentor had taught her never to fall victim to. She wouldn't let his training go to waste, not in front of her Alpha.

Ooc - We can end it after your post if you like.

The time had come. This would be her final strike. Landing this blow would surely put her in good stead in front of the Alpha and maybe even land her a strong rank within the pack. She could prove herself worthy of living amongst wolves. But, even more importantly, she would show her worth to Fel. Her mentor, her friend, her... well, everything right now. Fel trained her, Fel gave her a place to sleep and kept her warm in the winter. Narla didn't have many friends here, so Fel was her friend. Her very best friend. Fel was harsh and cold and hostile but sometimes Narla felt she saw something akin to kindness in the massive fae's eyes. She wanted to make Fel proud. Narla was certain that landing this blow and winning against the Delta would do just that.

Unfortunately, Narla hadn't been quite so lucky. She wasn't fast enough to pin the she-wolf before she recovered from their tumble. Though the dingo believed Breeze to be momentarily stunned, Breeze was actually playing a trick. A game, to lull her into a false sense of security, only to strike at the most opportune moment. In that final moment, as Narla sailed through the air and Breeze snapped up at her, her immediate reaction was to flinch away and take as much of the blow on her shoulder as possible. Although mentally, her immediate reaction was shame and doubt. How disappointed she knew Fel would be in her for failing. She fell to the ground beneath the wolf, feeling utterly worthless and defeated. How incredible that a single moment could change ones mood so swiftly.

She would not truly snap at the smaller warriors neck if her attack landed, for there was no need to do more damage than necessary. This fight was for dominance, to prove their worth. It was not a battle to the death and Breeze never wished to do much harm to the dingo. Narla had impressed her, and if she had looked at the sandy colored canid's expression, she might have found quite a bit of pride. The grey she-wolf was hardly surprised when the warrior flinched, jerking her neck away so that her shoulder was damaged instead. The dingo's fang scraped along her face and left a cut above her eye right eye. Thank goodness she had kept them narrowed, otherwise she might have lost sight on her right side. The cut wasn't super major, although it stung. Instead it was her neck and upper spine which suddenly had a flare of pain from the impact. For a moment the darker fae would close her jaws on the fur and muscles, but not making it terribly severe since the dingo had seemingly collapsed. Had she just given up? Had she truly expected the fight to be that easy? Breeze wouldn't worry about it quite yet since it could be a trick. Afterall, she had just pulled that on her opponent. As the dingo collapsed, the grey female would place a large paw over her packmates neck with her teeth bared. Her ears would not straighten not would her tail uncurl from her side until her Alpha announced the fight to be over. She would be ready to strike if Narla tried any other moves.

Narla was slammed back into the grass with the Delta above her. The dingo squirmed and wriggled, trying to loosen the fae's grip on her. Automatically, her body went into a defensive mode, pulling her ears back to her head, paws and tail curling close to the body. The small creature became even smaller, as small as possible. She hadn't expected the fight to be easy, but she'd thought herself to be quite clever and cunning, what with her quick thinking to roll in such a strange manner to avoid being crushed by the much larger female. perhaps she'd over- or underestimated how the difference in weight and size between her and her opponent would affect different manoeuvres, but she'd still managed to land a decent swipe of her canines to the Delta's side and the bit to the scruff of her neck. There may have been some other injuries too, bruising and the like. And now, with this fall he fangs had left a reasonable cut over the wolfs right eye. That thought spurred her on, she was still in this. She squirmed harder, doing her best to make herself and annoying, difficult target. A paw to her throat suddenly made her stop as her breath was being slowly cut off. The dingo tried barking, thrashing, thrusting, anything to liberate her lungs. Barking only made her voice hoarse and her throat feel even worse. The pressure continued slowly to the point where Narla didn't believe her Alpha would call the fight. Did he want her to die? No way in hell that bastard will get the best of me! The warrior growled in anger, not wanting to give up on her life. She gave a violent thrash, hoping to sweep her legs from under her and unbalance the wolf. At the same time she aimed a nasty bite for the paw pressed at her throat. Perhaps it would be enough to impress her Alpha, her will to live, to fight for her survival. When had she not fought? She couldn't remember a time.
