One Paw at a Time (Open) Empty

The ruddy blonde fae had taken Beta Marrok’s advice and had begun to explore the Helidos territory. Taking a path she traveled with her nose close to the ground, her tail swished happily behind her as she felt a sense of pride for being accepted. Lifting her head, silvery eyes watching her surroundings she found herself within neutral lands. Arres tilted her head to listen as her right ear flicked a fly away that irritated her still sensitive wound, a single triangular piece missing from the cream fae’s right ear due to a run in with a bobcat. She sniffed the slight breeze as she neared what looked like a clearing. Her eyes scanned the lush green grasses as she watched a small herd of deer grazing near the still silvery surface of a lake. Her eyes seemed to fill with wonder as her grey orbs observed the serine view. “So beautiful…” taking a stepping daintily into the clearing the small fae silently stalked her way towards the lake, she listened as the deer lightly shied away from her presence, but weren’t overly threatened by the small she-wolf.

Eager to reach a place where she wasn’t shorter than the tall grasses she sped up her pace, taking note of the many wolfen scents that mingled here, it fascinated her all of these new scents assaulting her small trembling black nose. Arres lifted her gaze from where she was sniffing and nearly scared herself as she say a glimpse of her own reflection in the mirror like lake’s surface. She wanted snort with laughter at the thought of scaring herself. Stretching her fur bristling she plopped down with her front paws in the water, tail wagging she enjoyed the peace of this place. Sighing and resting her chin upon her legs she closed her silver eye, ears twisting and flicking at the slightest sound. The fae wasn’t a fool, ad she was nervous by nature, making her always be on high alert.

The young pup was finally allowed to go explore the territories on her own. And what a relief! She hated having a caretaker always behind her back, telling her what to do and what not to do, when her little paws just wanted to run free. She had dashed off through the pack’s territories, bouncing joyfully from bush to bush on steadily growing legs. All the wonderful new scents of herbs that she had yet to discover bombarded her little nose. Athena knew that one day, she would be able to differentiate every single one of those smells. Her little adventure was going great… for a while.

After skipping around carelessly, Athena realized that the smell of her father’s wolves were no longer around her. How would she return home? Would she ever return home? Doubt and fear swarmed in her head as she spun around, scenting the air but to no avail.  She was lost. Her parents would kill her when they found her, if something else didn’t beat them to it. She stalked silently through the forest, coming upon a beautiful, clear lake with a little fae sitting by the water’s edge. Gathering all of her bravery, she began to walk towards the wolf with her thin tail high but slightly trembling. Athena gave as low of a growl as she could manage, which was pretty impressive for such a young fae, and spoke, “Friend or foe?”

Arres tilted her ears as she still had her paws resting in the cool waters. Turning her head she spotted a pup and smiled, “Hello, I’m Arres, an Omega for Helidos,” her soft silvery eyes looked to the pups tail that was trembling and frowned. “Are you alright miss?” Arres rose to her feet and tilted her head with concern. “Are you lost? May I help you?” even though she was an Omega she would do anything to climb out of the rank which she had been chained to her whole life. Stepping a little closer to the female pup she gently sniffed the air about her and wagged her tail when she scented Helidos. “I see now, no worries, I am definitely friend. What’s your name?”

Athena continued to growl as the wolf came up. However, when the rusty fae introduced herself, the apprentice visibly relaxed, her tail falling down limply in relief. A wolf of her own pack, and an omega at that. There must be nothing to fear about her. “I’m fine. I just got a little lost, that’s all. If you could point me in the direction of my father, I would be grateful.” As Arres stepped closer to her and spoke, the little pup flattened her ears, half in shock, half in irritation. “You do not recognize me? I am Athena, daughter of Azul, and eventually going to be Healer Athena.” She knew she could refer to her father by simply his name, but didn’t quite know if others could. It seemed like nonsense just to call him ‘Alpha,’ but there were rules she didn’t know of. Perhaps that was one of them. Regardless, Athena was secretly thankful that this fae was here.

Arres smiled, “I can track my trail back into the pack’s territory, so no worries.” However when the pup shouted, the small fae couldn’t help but back away, “I apologize…” her voice never reached much above a whisper, and was always a calming soft tone, with ears slightly flattened in some shame for not recognizing the Alpha’s daughter, although, she had really never had much of a run in with the pup before.

Turning, Arres looked back to the pup and tried to smile, “This way then, Athena.” The fae pressed her cool nose up into the winds and closed her eyes to concentrate, of course it didn’t take long before she picked up her scent, which to her always seemed floral, like wildflowers. So it was with dainty silent steps that she began to trot along her trail, glancing back to be sure the pup was following.

Athena stared in confusion at the fae as she backed off. She barely even heard the soft-toned apology and began to wonder at the wolf’s behavior, but was fairly satisfied that she could even push some grown-ups around, not just her brothers. With a little shrug, she bounded after the omega on small yet graceful paws. Catching up to her, the apprentice stretched her stride to approximately match that of the bigger female. “Why do you talk like that, miss? And why’d you back away? Did I scare you?” she adds a small growl before continuing on her spree of curiosity, “You must be new, not to know me. Oh, oh! Can you fight? Are you strong and brave like my dad? Do you have a mate? Why are you an Omega?” Athena giggled, excited by her own questions. The pup had no clue that some of those questions may be rude or even painful. All she knew was that, at that moment, Arres was an interesting wolf, and for a curious pup, there was no greater distraction. Her paws itched to ask her more, but she restrained herself at the sound of a little mouse farther off in the brush.

The fae’s ears flicked toward the sound of the pup’s voice as she listened to her paws step on the grasses that surrounded the Mirror Lake. Arres took note of Athena’s questions and sighed, “I have always talked like this. I was the Runt of the liter and nothing special.” The rust colored fae didn’t let her steps falter as she answered Athena’s further questions, despite the pain in her eyes she swallowed, “I cannot fight, but I am known for being quick and nimble in my former pack, no…I could never be strong, nor brave like your father…And…No…I have no mate…” She didn’t really want to tell the pup that she was weak and that was the reason why she was granted with being an Omega. The pup’s questions really didn’t bother her too much, but they did weigh heavily upon her much like everything else had since she was a pup. Looking ahead with silvery eyes she watched as they slowly approached the treeline, familiar scents filled her nostrils as the small fae lifted her nose to the wind. “The Helidos Pack Territory is ahead…”

The young pup did detect the pain in the fae’s eyes when she looked over to her.‘Something upset her. I think it might’ve been my nosiness…’ She thought for a moment and then stretched her head up, ears perked happily, “You’re not nothing. Everyone is special, in their own way. Just some wolves’ special things are kind of faint at first, like your voice. If you want others to notice that in you, all you have to do is stand tall on four paws and speak up. Well… that is if an apprentice’s thoughts are worth anything.”

A pleased smile crossed her muzzle when Athena realized that she recognized her surroundings. Really, she knew exactly where she was. And not only that, but there was a patch of marigold right to the side of her. The young fae bounded over and began to collect the herbs. When her jaw was full, she walked over to Arres and bowed her head, “Thanks for helping me out back there. Omega or not, you’re a hero right now. I’ll tell my dad you helped me or something, just be sure that he doesn’t find out I was exploring neutral territories. He says its not safe for me, and I don’t want any more lectures.” Athena’s voice was a bit muffled through the stems, but still fairly clear. She wondered if she should run back on her own or walk with the older fae.

The small fae listened to Athena's words and nodded softly, maybe she was right? But then again, what was there to her that wasn't weak. "It was no problem truly Apprentice Athena. I am glad to be a hero at least for just a day." Giving a soft smile she bowed to the retreating form of the pup and looked back to the lake. Maybe she should look once more at her reflection and see what she saw. With a scoff she shook her head and mumbled, "Yeah, if I looked really really really hard." Turning away from the pack lands she trotted back to the lake her soft strawberry coat bouncing lightly with each of her silent steps.

Upon reaching the lake she touched her nose to the mirrorlike lake and stepped into the waters. Her silvery eyes looked down at her blurred reflection with her ears perked she watched her cream coat wavering in the lake. "Maybe...The pup is right?" with a tilt of her head she laid her whole form down into the shallows of the lake and lefted her head high as she listened to the prairie birds chirp and sing.

His ears perked delicately as the soft breeze nipped at them, His thick fur staggered to each paw, Letting his weight shift over and over, His claws kneaded at the ground eagerly as he spotted some water, His tongue lolled from his mouth but he stopped dead in his tracks as the vision of the orange and white fae, Appeared in my vision, Being a loner he tried keeping his distance. He glanced up as the sun laid between the hills, And he trotted to the lakes contents, Lowering his muzzle he lapped up the water, His bulk frame flexing as his reflection appeared clearly in the water, Raising he licked the water from his muzzle and glanced back over at the fae, Her orange coat, But quite stunning at the same time, His broad shoulders tensed up as the wolf finally noticed him, His tail lowered to show the fae he was no threat to her presence, His ears perked and pointed her way curiously. His pale hazel optics set down on her, Cautiously he took a few paces forward, Then stopped trying to sense if she was cautioned.
